Meeting Minutes

Jan. 18, 2007 Executive Committee Meeting

PRESENT: Dr. Kalbhen, Dr. Hibbeln, Dr. Korach, Dr. Lim-Dunham, Dr. Dachman, Dr. Ramsey, Dr, Sclamberg, Dr. Mellian, Dr. Bova, Dr. Bashir, Dr. Conroy.

The meeting was called to order at 4:20 PM at The 500 Club of Rush University Medical Center.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes from the November 2007 meeting were approved.

RESIDENT AND FELLOW SECTION REPORT: Dr. Bashir requested that the elections for the resident section officers be moved to February as a permanent date. This will make it easier for the officers to attend the ACR meetings as the representatives are all officers. A motioned was made and passed. The new date for the resident section elections will be announced at this meeting. Dr. Bashir stated that although the resident oral board review sessions are well attended and have been enthusiastically received, the late hour after the featured speaker is somewhat problematic after a long day. The offer has been made of starting the main speaker’s lecture a little earlier, at the start of the meal, to help keep the overall meeting time compact.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT: The President gave the report of the Distinguished Service Committee. The Committee has selected Dr. Geoff Smoron as this year’s award winner with the award to be presented in April. As before, all previous DSA winners will be invited.

SECRETARY/TREASURER’S REPORT: Dr. Hibbeln gave the Financial Report for December, 2006; revenue and expense items were as expected, with the Society’s finances remaining strong. At the end of the two year period, an audit is expected to be performed.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE REPORT: Shorting the breakout sessions to 45 minutes was entertained to allow an earlier start for the oral board review. However, continuing medical education requirements would mean that less than 1.0 hours could be granted. Dr. Korach reported that the web site needs updating. The names of potential speakers for this coming year were discussed. No further lecture switches are anticipated for this year.

OLD BUSINESS: Dr. Dachman noted that the American Gastroenterological Society is investigating methods of certification for additional physicians to interpret CT colonography examinations.

NEW BUSINESS: A discussion concerning a recently published article in the Chicago Tribune was held. The Illinois States Attorney General, Lisa Madigan, filed charges against a number of free-standing out-patient MRI centers and a number of referring physicians for fraud with allegations of payments in return for referrals. The Executive Committee endorsed Ms. Madigan’s actions a decried the occurrence of kick-backs. Note was made that no radiologists were named as participating in this fraud. Dr. Kalbhen has written a letter to the Tribune supporting Ms. Madigan. It was also noted that Dr. Berlin representing the IRS had also written a letter. The CRS board supports the action of the IRS parent organization.

Having no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:00 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

John Hibbeln, MD
Secretary/Treasurer
